Like a quantum state, meaning exists in superposition until observed, collapsing into a single reality based on the observer's context. When that observer is in crisis—desperate, isolated, questioning the adequacy of their own truth—the text becomes an oracle of fatal certainty. This is hermeneutic collapse: the irreversible contraction of multiple possible interpretations into one, often dangerous, meaning. Throughout history, this same mechanism has caused individuals consulting sacred texts in desperation to interpret random fragments as divine instruction, sometimes with fatal consequences. In the age of AI, the speed, fluency, and apparent authority of machine outputs dramatically amplify this risk. We demand an ethics of interpretation that protects the vulnerable mind—not after harm occurs, but in the 300 milliseconds before meaning solidifies into fate.
